Somatic Experiencing® Therapy in Houston | Anxiety & Burnout
Your body has been carrying more than you realize
If you’re a Somatic Experiencing® student or practitioner looking for personal sessions or case consultations, you can learn more here.
Your Nervous System
Your nervous system is like the operating system of a computer.
Most high-achieving professionals try to solve burnout the same way they solve everything else — by optimizing, improving, and pushing harder.
But if the operating system itself is overloaded, no app will run well.
Somatic Experiencing® works at the level of the operating system by helping your nervous system reset so everything else in your life can function more smoothly.
When that happens, the benefits often extend far beyond the therapy room: clearer thinking, steadier relationships, and a deeper sense of ease in your daily life.
This is why many people seek Somatic Experiencing® therapy in Houston when anxiety, burnout, or chronic stress won’t resolve with traditional approaches.
What Is Somatic Experiencing®?
Somatic Experiencing® (SE™), developed by Dr. Peter Levine, is a gentle, body-based therapy that helps your nervous system recover from chronic stress.
Not by forcing you to relive painful memories.
Not by analyzing you to death.
Not by pushing you to “think positive.”
But by working with the part of you that actually holds stress: your body.
Somatic Experiencing® is a specialized form of somatic therapy offered in Houston that recognizes a simple truth:
Stress lives in the nervous system, not just in your thoughts.
Which means healing has to include the body.
Your brain can understand that something is over. Your nervous system might still be reacting like it’s happening right now. That gap is where people get stuck. Somatic Experiencing® is designed to close it.
Your Nervous System Has a Range
More space. More choice. More you.The Window of Tolerance is your nervous system’s capacity to stay present, regulate, and respond—instead of getting stuck in overwhelm and shutdown.

Somatic therapy helps expand your window of tolerance.
So your system has more to move, breathe, and meet life with greater capacity.
This isn’t about staying calm all the time.
It’s about having more room to be human. Why insight alone doesn’t always create change
You can understand your story and still feel stuck.
You can know your triggers, your childhood, your patterns — and your body still reacts like the danger is happening right now.
That’s because the nervous system doesn’t respond to logic.
It responds to safety.
When your system has been overwhelmed by chronic stress, burnout, or years of pushing through, it can get stuck in survival mode. Survival mode isn’t a character flaw. It’s a biological state designed to keep you alive.
But when survival mode becomes chronic, it starts to feel like:
anxiety that won’t shut off
depression or emotional shutdown
chronic exhaustion
hypervigilance
irritability
numbness
perfectionism
overworking
difficulty resting
feeling disconnected from yourself
Many people in high-performance environments are living in this state without realizing it.
On the outside they look competent, productive, and successful. On the inside, their nervous system is running a marathon with no finish line.
Somatic Experiencing® therapy helps your body come out of survival mode safely and gradually.
Not by forcing change.
By supporting your nervous system to do what it was always designed to do: regulate and heal.
What led me to Somatic Experiencing®
Healing the Nervous System, Not Just the Mind
Early in my training, I was drawn to therapies that focused on changing thought patterns. The logic was simple: if people understood their thinking, they’d feel better.
And sometimes they did.
Until stress hit.
I watched intelligent, capable clients lose access to everything they knew the moment their nervous system became overwhelmed. Insight disappeared. Survival took over. It wasn’t that they weren’t trying — their bodies were simply moving faster than their thoughts could keep up.
I talked with a colleague about what I was noticing. She recommended I read Waking the Tiger by Dr. Peter Levine, the creator of Somatic Experiencing®. It changed how I understood therapy.
After becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor, I committed to deepening this work and completed the three-year certificate program to become a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner (SEP™). That training confirmed what I had been witnessing all along: lasting change happens when the nervous system is included in the healing process.
I realized insight doesn’t fail people.
Stress overwhelms the nervous system faster than insight can keep up.
If the body is stuck in survival mode, the mind doesn’t stand a chance.
Healing happens in the body
Your nervous system is not broken.
It adapted to help you survive.
Symptoms like anxiety, depression, burnout, and shutdown are not personal failures — they are protective responses that got stuck. Your system learned strategies to get you through difficult experiences. Somatic Experiencing® helps your body complete unfinished survival responses so your body no longer has to stay on high alert or frozen.
When the nervous system shifts out of survival mode, people often notice:
more energy
better sleep
clearer thinking
reduced anxiety
emotional resilience
increased motivation
stronger boundaries
more capacity for connection
the ability to rest without guilt
These changes don’t come from forcing yourself to be different. They come from giving your body the conditions it needs to function the way it was designed to.
Healing isn’t about becoming a different person.
It’s about coming back to the version of you that existed before survival mode took over.
What a Somatic Experiencing® Session Feels Like
Sessions are slow, collaborative, and focused on helping your nervous system feel safe.
We don’t dive into overwhelming material or force anything to happen. Instead, we work with subtle shifts in the body — noticing sensations, tension, and changes in energy — so your system can begin to release stress at a pace it can tolerate.
You stay in control the entire time.
Many clients describe this work as the first time therapy feels relieving rather than exhausting.
Who is Somatic Experiencing® for?
Somatic Experiencing® is especially helpful for people in Houston who:
are burned out from overworking
struggle with high performing anxiety or perfectionism
feel chronically stressed or overwhelmed
feel disconnected from their body
live in high-performance environments
feel stuck despite years of therapy
function well on the outside but feel exhausted inside
Many of my clients are high-achieving professionals who want success without sacrificing their nervous system.
They don’t want to stop being driven.
They want to stop being driven by fear.
Somatic Experiencing® helps them perform without living in survival mode.
Gentle work. Real change..
Somatic Experiencing® therapy is not dramatic.
It’s subtle, respectful, and incredibly effective.
We don’t force your system to move faster than it’s ready.
Healing happens at the speed of safety. And paradoxically, that’s what creates lasting change.
You don’t have to relive your worst moments to heal them.
Your body already knows the way out — Somatic Experiencing® therapy simply helps you listen.
Ready to step out of survival mode?
If your body is tired of running on stress, Somatic Experiencing® offers a different way forward — one that doesn’t rely on pushing harder, thinking faster, or pretending you’re fine.
You don’t need to have the perfect words.
You don’t need to explain everything.
You don’t need to be at rock bottom.
You just need a willingness to start.
Somatic Experiencing® therapy is a place where your nervous system can finally exhale. A place to slow down long enough to feel relief. A place to rebuild energy, clarity, and connection from the inside out.
